The world's first webcam was used to monitor the fill level of a coffee machine - a sign of the important role that coffee plays in society. Currently, three out of four German citizens regularly take the time to enjoy a coffee, often accompanied by a piece of cake, at least once a week. Coffee consumption increases with age, which can be explained by habits and more available free time. Drinking coffee becomes even more important as a social activity, especially in retirement age.

More than two in five people also express the desire to take a coffee break more often. The hectic pace of everyday life often leaves little room for such moments of relaxation, which is why the under-35s in particular would like to interrupt their stressful daily routine more often for a coffee. Many see this not only as a short break, but also as an opportunity to network and socialise with others.

Reasons

Drinking coffee has a long tradition in Germany and has always gone far beyond pure enjoyment. Historically, coffee houses were meeting places where people - regardless of gender or origin - came together to exchange ideas, hold discussions or hear the latest rumours. They were considered places of intellectual exchange and cultural life, where artists, thinkers and writers came together to debate current events.

Even today, coffee and cake still play a central role in community and socialising. A coffee break offers the opportunity to chat in a relaxed atmosphere, maintain old friendships or make new contacts. For many people, these get-togethers - whether with neighbours, friends or family - are a fixed ritual in everyday life. These gatherings are particularly important in rural areas and strengthen the sense of community. Many people also don't want to miss out on coffee with colleagues, as these short breaks in the working day often provide space for informal conversations that can improve the working atmosphere.

But a cup of coffee on its own, with or without cake, is also a short break. It helps to reduce stress, provides a moment of inner peace and increases individual well-being. For some people, this time alone is an important opportunity to organise their thoughts and recharge their batteries before returning to everyday life.

Forecast

The tradition of drinking coffee is here to stay, whether in the comfort of your own home, on the go or in a café. Especially in times when everyday life is characterised by digital communication and fast processes, many people long for real, personal encounters - and the coffee break offers precisely this space. New concepts and developments, such as mobile coffee bars in residential areas, personalised coffee blends based on individual taste profiles or coffee and cake picnic sets, are expanding the range and also appealing to younger generations. These innovative ideas help to ensure that coffee can be enjoyed in any situation, be it on a walk through the park or as a special addition to family celebrations.

For many German citizens, a cup of coffee and a slice of cake will continue to be a moment to take a deep breath, enjoy, socialise and relax. The demand for sustainable and fair-trade coffee also shows that awareness of the origin and quality of the beverage is increasing.
